The Red Thread

There is an old idea that appears in many cultures.

The belief that certain people, places and moments are connected by an invisible thread.

A thread that stretches across time.

Across distance.

Across generations.

Whether we notice it or not, we spend much of our lives following it.

There is a moment when you first hold the Original Edition and notice it.

A single red thread.

Running through the nubuck.

Quiet. Almost hidden.

Easy to overlook — until suddenly it is impossible to ignore.

That thread is not decorative.

It was never meant to be.

It is a reminder that every object carries something invisible within it.

The intention of the person who made it.

The story of the materials it came from.

The future it is moving toward.

Looking back, it is often easier to see the thread than it is to follow it.

A conversation that seemed ordinary.

A chance encounter.

An unexpected journey.

A door that opened when another one closed.

What appeared random at the time begins to reveal its pattern.

Life rarely moves in a straight line.

It turns. It pauses. It surprises us.

Yet somehow, through all its uncertainty, certain connections remain.

The values we inherit.

The stories we are told.

The rituals we repeat without realizing where they began.

The people who shape us.

The memories that refuse to fade.

For us, the red thread became a symbol of those connections.

Not as something mystical.

But as a reminder.

A reminder that every encounter leaves a trace.

That every decision alters the course of a journey.

That every generation leaves something behind for the next.

Perhaps the thread was never leading us toward a destination.

Perhaps it was always leading us toward one another.

The red thread runs through every piece of the Original Edition — the first edition of The Circular Backgammon. It is a visible gesture connecting those who play today with the generations that may follow.
